Visit some of the notorious townships of Cape Town and learn more about South Africa’s apartheid policies. Experience the multicultural and exciting District Six from the local’s perspectives. Have the chance to meet and chat with local entrepreneurs and townsfolk on your day visiting South Africa’s most historic townships.
Explore District Six, where 60,000 inhabitants were forcibly removed during the 1970s by the apartheid regime. Originally established as a Community of freed Slaves, Merchants, Artisans, Labourers and Immigrants. The area is, one of the main municipal districts in the center of Cape Town, housed diverse people from Dutch colonies in Indian, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Drive to Langa's bustling streets, bustling markets, and bustling neighborhoods, where you'll have the opportunity to engage with locals and sample an array of delectable foods from street vendors and authentic local eateries. Learn the history of the oldest township at sites like the Old Pass Office and the monument to Robert Sobukwe. Also find out life during apartheid on a walking tour of the hostels and shacks. Visit a shebeen (pub) and try some homemade beer.
Continue to drive through the Bonteheuwel township, reserved for the "colored" community during the days of apartheid. It was built in the 1960s as a new neighborhood to accommodate 'Coloured' families who were being forcibly removed from other areas of Cape Town which were demarcated as 'White'. Hear about the division of people and its impact.
You will head to a location known as Gugs, and it was established in the 60s due to the overcrowding of Langa, which was the only black residential area for Cape Town at the time to help accommodate the many migrant workers who moved to Cape Town from the rural Transkei region in the Eastern Cape. You will viit the Gugulethu 7 Memorial to the members of an anti-apartheid group killed by the South African Police in 1986, and the memorial to the American student Amy Biehl, murdered by PAC supporters in 1993.
End in the Khayelitsha township and hear about the work the Philani Center does for local mothers and children. Khayelitsha is the largest township in Cape Town and is home to more of the working class locals than anywhere else. The name Khayelitsha means “new home” and is where many non-white South Africans were moved to by the Apartheid Government in 1985.
